Britmodeler.com was set up by 3 friends from the UK who met on ARC a couple of years back.
Mike returned to modelling a couple of years ago after a long break, and is an avid fan of eclectic subjects, especially vacforms, with a keen eye for subjects that no-one's ever even heard of. He enjoys scratchbuilding parts, although he's not yet got many kits finished - probably because of the difficult tasks that he undertakes! John (Skii) had rejoined the fray some 4 years earlier, and has become an accomplished modeller, and is expert in most fields of modelling, but has a special affinity for the Tornado. Nigel (Cop) never really left, although he had been dormant in the hobby for sometime during his army service. He's another eclectic builder, and builds anything from gliders, Lightnings and Victors to F-16s. Both Mike and Nigel live in Chester within a few miles of eachother although they'd never met until they spoke on ARC. John is salted away down south in Slough, although he's originally from Cheshire, so the connection is still there. We had chatted many times about the good and bad points of various forums, but never really found one that was devoted mainly to the British Modeller, or British subjects. Eventually, we got frustrated with "making do", with our Britich interests being lost in the crowd on other sites, and decided to set up Britmodeler.com one Friday night (we were sober, we promise!). Mike began by purchasing the domain names on a Friday night, then bought the forum software, having had previous experience of the professional, flexible Invision Powerboard software. We set up a host of forums, sub-categories and so on, and then invited a few friends to have a look on the following Sunday. By the following Sunday we had a membership of 100, and a couple of thousand posts under our belt, with busy vibrant forums and a membership that between them share a lot of expertise in British modelling subjects, although any modeller from anywhere, modelling anything is more than welcome to join in the fun. Since Britmodeller has grown beyond what we could have reasonably expected in our first year, we have added Mike Reeves of Two Mikes Resin, a respected American modeller and Anglophile (when it comes to aircraft at least!), and Greg Buckley, a straight-talking serving soldier with a talent for the hobby as moderators. With their help, the forums should continue to grow, and become more useful and entertaining as time goes by. We hope you enjoy visiting this site as much as we have enjoyed creating it - please come back to visit, because it's your contributions that make this a great place to be. |
